Cork Chapter Seminar 2013

Cork Chapter Seminar 20th April 2013

On a beautiful Saturday morning in April we gathered in the Midleton Park Hotel for the Cork Chapter One Day Seminar 2013.
The excellent, informative and entertaining demonstrators for the day were Nick Agar and Emmet Kane who put on 3 presentations each
and in addition to that the we had local members Kieran Higgins and Peter Manning.
with plenty seating and viewing space for all.  They also provided tea and coffee in the morning and afternoon and a 3 course lunch for all
the attendees to ensure we had the sustenance to keep us for a full afternoon of activity.

We also thank our sponsors, without whom the day could not happen;

Nick and Emmet each gave us 3 entertaining presentations. At 9.30 Nick commenced with his Viking Bowl which was textured, Metalised
 and colored.Texturing was done from with items from Nick's  "everything drawer" which contains punches, drill bits, leather punches and
 much more. He also used black spirit stain, gilding wax and colored ink.

Emmet started with Ebonising and Gilding which included a selection of green oak, turning a small bowl then texturing and gilding
Two similar and yet very different approaches and techniques by the turners gave us many topics for discussion and debate during tea at 11.00.

After tea was had Nick show us his ideas on a Platter that was colored and airbrushed with leaves using homemade stencils.
Meanwhile Emmet's interpretation of a Textured Platter was progressing in the second demonstration room and included suggestions on turning and texturing a platter using texturing burrs, wire brushes a pointing tool, a blow torch and also color. The use of fire always appears to be an option of Emmet.

After these everyone sat down to a 3 course lunch followed by lots of tea coffee and talk.

Back to the demonstrations by local turners Kieran Higgins and Peter Manning, while Emmet and Nick judged the open competition and would then be back for their final demonstrations at 3.30.

Kieran illustrated his deep bowl hollowing technique for large vessels.  Kieran's expertise with large pieces is well known and this was an inspiring presentation. Peter turned an Off-centre Eggcup and never again will any of us be able to turn a simple eggcup without thinking how easy it is to make a more interesting one.

For their third and final session at 3.30 Nick showed us a Bud Vase with ceramic effects and Emmet planed to demonstrate Hollow Form Turning. How to cut and use burr wood and green wood using home made
 tools and finish with texture to enhance the piece.

Finally there was the presentation of prizes and congratulations to the winners> The presentation of the prizes was made by our guest   National Chairman  Joe Laird;

Overall it was a wonderful day of woodturning.  All the demonstrators were entertaining, informative, and humorous with some elements of health and safety instructions included. Finally I would to thank Brian McAdoo, the chief seminar organizer,and all those who helped to make the weekend such a success.
